Treating a Baker's Cyst Non-invasively

In desperation, ( Since he refused Dr. McDaniel's standard treatment. ) I created this formula for my father after the Mayo Clinic failed to offer any treatment for this problem.  A large Baker's Cyst developed after Knee replacement surgery that prevented him from regaining his strength.  We consulted with SEVERAL doctors at the Mayo Clinic.  They All just told him to go home and wait for it to go away.
[ One of the reasons the doctors didn't want to do anything was that they were deathly afraid of a possible infection, which could have disrupted the healing process of the replacement knees.  Dad's lack of activity sure didn't help the healing process either. ]

After 7 months of watching him suffer in extreme agony, in spite of massive quantities of EXPENSIVE pain medication, I developed this formula.  One of the main criteria was that it had to "taste like water" so that I could get him to drink it.  Significant results were seen in 3 days ( 2 liters of solution ), making me wonder what was actually going on.  However, daily improvement continued, and one should not argue with success — one just needs to "nail down" ALL the variables before making any claims.

[ So far ( 8 months ), his medical bills at the Mayo Clinic for this adventure, have exceeded $500,00.00 !!!   That is more money than he earned during his entire working life !!! ]

A Baker's Cyst consists of a sack of fluid in the region in back of the knee. Doctors don't seem to know how they develop or how to treat them in a non-invasive manner.   [ Skip Web Stuff ]

Baker's cyst

(William Baker, 1839–1896, British surgeon), a synovial cyst in the posterior aspect of the knee related to a knee effusion leading to distension of the gastrocnemius – semimembranosus bursa; this entity is also termed a popliteal cyst.

The cysts may or may not communicate with the neighboring joint. Baker's cysts may dissect between the muscles of the leg or rupture, with extravasation of fluid, producing clinical manifestations resembling those of thrombophlebitis. Ultrasonography, radionuclide arthrography (Fig.1), standard arthrography, CT scanning, computed arthrotomography and MR imaging are helpful in the diagnosis of a Baker's cyst.

Baker's Cyst Summary:

A Baker's Cyst forms when the joint capsule of the Knee joint tears and allows the joint (synovial) fluid to leak out, Therefore the name "cyst" is a misnomer for this phenomenon. Classically, the term cyst is reserved for pockets lined with secretory cells that continue forming the fluid inside the cyst. This is NOT the case in a Baker's.

In a Baker's Cyst, the fluid that leaks out is just contained in the tissue spaces of the leg and puts pressure on those tissues. ALL of the fluid is produced, still, inside the knee joint.

THEREFORE, unless the tear in the joint capsule is found at surgery, and repaired, of course it will recur! Most surgeons do not bother with the tear. They just remove the fluid sac that has been formed by the leakage. What, then, will prevent the "cyst" from forming again??

Finally, why did the joint capsule tear? Arthritis is caused by several mechanisms, many of which greatly increase the pressure within the joint. Can you imagine how THAT might cause a tear (rupture) in the capsule?? See the fibromyositis/arthritis archive for these mechanisms.

Dealing with the causes of arthritis will go a long way towards preventing the recurrence of a Baker's Cyst.

1. Demographics — Forty percent of us have a communication between the knee joint and the bursa located between the gastrocnemius and semimembranosus tendons. Any process that causes the knee to swell in these individuals can lead to fluid being forced into the bursa and causing it's enlargement.

2. Symptoms — Swelling behind the medial knee and pain or pressure with full flexion. There is usually associate swelling in the knee. Occasionally the cyst can rupture and present as calf enlargement the so-called "pseudothrombophlebitis".

Baker's Cyst Summary

Posted by Walt Stoll on February 01, 1999.
In Reply to: I've done my homework, Dr. Stoll posted by Susan on Jan. 31, 1999.

A Baker's Cyst is simply a hernia of the synovial sac that encloses the knee joint. ALL joints have synovial sacs for the lubrication of that joint. Chronic "bracing" causes a tremendous increase in the pressure inside any joint. However, since the knee joint is so large, and we put all our weight on it each step we make, this is the joint where this pressure causes the fluid to form a hernia the most commonly: a "Baker's Cyst".

This is one of the more important reasons I say that Baker's is related to the same causes that form an arthritic tendency.

When any muscle contracts, the opposing muscle for that joint is supposed to relax completely by reflex action. If it does not (the definition of "bracing": when all muscles stay contracted to a certain extent 24 hours a day, even when asleep) the muscles work against each other and grind the joint surfaces together harder than normal and aggravate the wear & tear of the joint surfaces AT THE SAME TIME THE PRESSURE IN THE SYNOVIAL FLUID IS GREATLY INCREASED.

Surely, by now, the reader can begin to understand why this causes Baker's Cysts.

The symptoms of a Baker's are directly related to where the hernia happens. Nearly all of these occur on the back of the knee BECAUSE that is where the protecting tissues are the thinnest (the same as ALL joints: the tissue inside the joint is thinnest since less protection is needed there).

Of course, that is also where all the major nerves, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons are as well and for the same reason. If this is confusing, look at an anatomy atlas. When the bulge presses on something, one gets pain from that structure. That is why symptoms can go "down the leg", etc.

Remember, when one has severe leg or foot pain from a herniated disc, the surgery is on the back not on the leg or foot.

The only thing yet known that will reduce the pressure inside the joint is getting rid of the bracing and the only thing yet known that will do that is the regular practice of skilled relaxation for 6-12 months. Once the cyst is already there, the SR will not get rid of it any more than an inguinal hernia can be repaired by SR. It has to be surgically removed and the SR will help prevent the next one.

The surgical approach to a Baker's Cyst is right where it is coming out of the ruptured sac. That is why the approach is from the rear. A surgeon would have to have a VERY good reason for entering the knee joint for a Baker's Cyst. The idea is to remove the cyst without breaking it and then suturing up the weakened part of the sac that allowed the bulging tissue.

This should be a pretty simple surgery. If the cyst is pressing on a nerve, etc., it can just be peeled off.

A Baker's Cyst Follows The Rules of Science Too !

In order to treat a Baker's Cyst non-invasively, one must have a good understanding of Osmosis,   Fluid Dynamics,   Zeta Potential and Blood Chemistry.

The study of osmosis teaches us, that it is extremely important for the ratio of solute to solvent to be in the proper range, for chemical processed to proceed properly. In general, most elderly I know show signs of dehydration. This issue is complicated by the fact that our thirst mechanism isn't activated until our bodies are a full two quarts deficient in water. On average, we only have seven quarts of blood, which means the body needs to pull water out of its cells, under these conditions, to keep essential processes in balance. However, this then disrupts cellular metabolism slowing regeneration. Sagging skin along with the failure of an indentation — made by pressing a finger nail into the tip of the finger — to "bounce back" within a couple of seconds are indicators of dehydration. Dehydration also causes abnormal stress to be placed on the joints, which promotes arthritic conditions.

I was taught in the Boy Scouts that the way to re-hydrate a severely dehydrated person was to prepare a special solution consisting of a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of sugar in a quart of water.

I use Maple Syrup to provide the sugar component.  Maple Syrup also has a whole complement of essential atoms in addition to the sugar. After all, Maple Syrup is condensed tree blood.

For the pinch of salt, I use a blend of electrolyte salts developed and prescribed by Dr. T.C. McDaniel of Cincinnati OH. In addition, I add a lithium salt for reasons described in other parts of this web site.

Ascorbic acid is used as an "Anionic Surfactant" and also as a mechanism for transporting "Catonic Atoms" to the proper cellular sites, where an ion exchange reaction occurs, which then nourishes the cells.

Step One:  Enhancing Blood Plasma Electrolytes

           —   Human Blood   — Blood is very complex.

Click to learn what it takes to keep your blood cells healthy.
You require a healthy cardiovascular system,
in order to have a healthy body.
Our bio-system functions through a wildly complex mechanism involving "ion exchange" reactions controlled by the electric force. Put simply, different molecules will carry, and then release various atoms, and then hook-up with another atom or group to keep the transport molecule in balance.

In a way it is like a ship "taking on" water for ballast. The ship can work without the water, but the ballast allows it to operate at its optimum performance level.

Human blood is also, very complex and this Whole System too is kept running smoothly through the influences of the "Electric Force".

The atom s virtual electron cloud
attracting polar water molecules.
Each component in solution can control a large quantity of water. This is why water moves through a membrane to the side that has the greatest amount of solute. Therefore, a cell must have the right amount and type of salt to be fully hydrated. This is one function of the electrolyte salts.
This is also why excess salt can cause a gain in the body's "water weight" and why salt must be removed to loose water weight.  Pure water is the best way to rid the body of un-needed salt ions, for reasons discussed elsewhere at this site.

Humans, Apes and Guinea Pigs are the only known mammals I know about, who don't have a system for making Vitamin C in their bodies.

Vitamin C Molecule

Ascorbic Acid The presence of the four hydroxyl groups ( OH ) makes this molecule a very good Anionic Surfactant.

Thus, Vitamin C has a powerful effect on our blood's Zeta Potential, keeping our blood cells separated and flowing smoothly.

[ Studies have shown that it takes 4.5 grams of vitamin C daily for women, and even more for men, to keep our defense system's lymphocytes — pictured above — happy and functioning properly. ]

—   Tommy's Baker's Cyst Treatment Formula   —
[ This is meant to be a guide for doctors who understand the above science. ]

2 liter plastic bottle filled aprox. 80% with RO water.

0.875 grams ( ½ teaspoon* ) Ascorbic Acid Power.

6 grams ( aprox. 1.5 teaspoons* ) of refrigerated Maple Syrup.
[ Condensed Tree Blood — aprox. 30 to 1 concentration — Maple Syrup is about 50% water.  1 gallon weights about 11 pounds – water weighs 8.33 lb. @ 20° C   This means we have about 3 grams of solids by weight. ]

[ I pour maple syrup into the spoon until it "domes up" and just begins to trickle over the side.   I then wash off the spoon and plastic funnel by pouring in several more ounces of RO water. ]

Shake well — adding love energy — and Allow Time for the ascorbic acid to "chelate" the free Cations — "Free Radicals" — in the solution.   About an hour is a good amount of time.   Shaking a couple more times will speed things along and will add air to the water, which improves its taste.
[ The Ascorbic Acid will be used here to transport these dangerous — if they are free — essential elements to the proper cellular sites where an ion exchange reaction occurs. After it has delivered it cargo, the ascorbic acid gains additional power as an Anionic Surfactant. ]

Then add ...

1.25 g. ( ½ teaspoon* ) Epsom Salt — Magnesium Sulphate   ( MgSO4 • 7H2O   Mol. Wt. 246.5   9.87% Mg )

30 mg. Tri-Lithium Citrate Tetrahydrate   ( C6H5Li3O7 • 4H2O   Mol. Wt. 279.96   10.01% Li )
( 1 cap full — standard plastic 1 liter soda pop bottle — 3.6 grams Tri-Lithium Citrate dissolved in 1 liter RO water. )
[ Lithium is an essential element in our bio-system and lithium citrate was used to make 7Up before the doctors started using lithium carbonate to treat mania.   Lithium is also used for "liver cures" by some doctors.
Biological processes will substitute in a molecule, an atom of related character, if the one it really needs isn't present in its environment. The substitute is really a "place holder" and can't perform all of the functioning of the desired atom. Sodium is used when adequate quantities of potassium or lithium are not present. Not only is sodium a physically larger atom, it also has its valence electron in a different orbital altering the way it interacts with other atoms. Providing a lithium atom, allows the sodium atom to be displaced restoring normal functioning. ]

26 cc. ( 4 teaspoons ) half strength "Zeta Aid Concentrate" — 1 package salt crystals dissolved in 2 liters of RO water.
[ Helps to improve measuring accuracy. ]

Add RO water to make 2 liters.

Shake Well — Keep Refrigerated !!!
[ This stuff is a very good growth medium. ]

It is rather important that this mixture be taken on an empty stomach.
[ I have only been able to get my dad to drink 2/3 liter per day, but this has been enough to produce amazing results.   I feel 2 liters per day would have provided faster and better results. ]

Studies have shown that water is quickly absorbed into the blood from an empty stomach.

It is also important to rinse your bottle with very hot water between uses to remove anything that has been growing in the previous batch. Sometimes an organism in the air will make its way into the solution.

McDaniel Medical Clinic
Anionic Surfactant Zeta Crystals
(Zeta Aid)
Stock Solution Concentrate:  1 package in one quart RO water.
Use:  1 tablespoon ( ½ oz. ) of concentrate mixed in pint of RO water, taken on an empty stomach.

1 package contains 66 grams of a salt mixture that contains citrates, sulphates, carbonates, and phosphates ( Anionic Surfactants ) — along with sodium and potassium. This produces a final concentration of about 2,000 ppm, if one ignores any water of crystallization in the salts.

Dr. McDaniel's formula is based on the work of Thomas M. Riddick.   Below is Riddick's published version of "Zeta Aid".  Riddick's goal was to increase the Zeta Potential of blood allowing greater "carrying capacity".

5 Sodium Hexametaphosphate 14NaPO3 • Na2O 1490 1:3(Eqv.) 0.67

One of Dr. McDaniel's salts is a carbonate. My guess is sodium bicarbonate to replace the sodium sulphate. Dr. McDaniel adds an additional magnesium salt if the patient has need to control and prevent "Arrhythmias".   Magnesium has many roles in the body, and many people don't get enough magnesium in their diets. It is wise to include this atom in the mix.

—  Analysis  —

Maple Syrup solids — 1,500 ppm
Ascorbic acid, anh. — 437 ppm
Epsom Salt, anh. — 305 ppm
Zeta Aid salt, anh. — 300 ppm.
Lithium salt, anh.  —  22 ppm
      Total:  ( mg. / liter ) — 2,564 ppm

      Estimated Specific Conductance 5,128 micro-ohms

The specific conductance of healthy blood is about 12,000 and the rehydration fluid must be less than that by a good margin to be properly effective.

3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon.

2 tablespoons = 1 ounce.

Weights were measured with a "Ohaus Triple Beam 2,610 gram Balance".
* [ 2 "fully domed" spoons ( 1 teaspoon ) of Cold Maple Syrup were measured, weighed and averaged.   4 level spoonfuls ( ½ teaspoon ) of ascorbic acid ( Epsom Salt ) were measured, weighed and averaged. ]

"And Now, "The Rest" of the Story."

My formal training in psychology has taught me many things. One is that you can cure one out of four people with a sugar pill, if the patient truly believes that the pill has healing powers. This is one factor in pricing pills, and this factor is entered into the concept of "Co-payments".  If the price is too cheap, the psychology is that the pills must not be very good  —  Expensive Pills = Powerful Pills !!!   For the Psychologist, the only scientific approach that is valid is a "Double Blind Study".

The Chemist, on the other hand, can do valid studies in a "test tube" and he can use powerful computers to predict chemical reactions, if all the proper variables are entered. This Web Page, can use the power of Your Computer to teach you about Osmosis.  However, some variables are really hard to enter into a mathematical formula.

—   Magnetic Assistance ?   —

A friend sent me some material about the healing powers of magnets. My dad read it and decided to give them a try. He obtained some of these pellet-sized magnets, which are held in place by an adhesive disk about an inch in diameter. After several days he decided that they weren't helping.

About a week later, becoming desperate with pain, he asked me to go to Radio Shack and obtain some stronger magnets for him. The day he started using these magnets was the same day I finally came up with a mixture that "tasted like water" and got him to drink 2/3 of a liter.  So now at this point, we have two variables in the equation — this is not good science.  However, with dad drinking only 2/3 liter per day, the effects were absolutely amazing !!!  Bordering on a miracle !!!  In just three days, a wonderful affect could be seen in his walking abilities.

"It Was The Bug in the Flower !!!"

About a week later, I was watching television when a "trailer" triped my memory.

A while back a movie came out titled "Medicine Man" staring CH. It was a story about ...

At the end of the movie, we learn that it was a bug that was in the flower, not the flower itself, that was needed to complete the healing power of the "Jungle Medicine Man's potion".

Oh boy !!!   Maple Syrup derives its characteristic flavor from the activities of bacteria that feed on one type of tree sap sugar and produce another.
[ They eat one type — there are many different kinds of sugar — and pee out another as their waste product of metabolism. In this way they derive their energy for life. ]

Here is another fun part that drives scientists wild. The amount of this maple flavored sugar changes constantly through out the sugar season, as the population of these bacteria grows with the warming weather. This results in the syrup from the first cooking having a light maple flavor and color, while the syrup from the last cooking is much darker with a very much stronger maple taste. I always ask for syrup cooked late in the season. Professionally speaking, My Maple Syrup has a large content of Inverted Sugars.
